Driving the Moki Dugway, 8/24/2019

From the Valley of the Gods scenic drive, we took UT 261 north (a right turn at the west entrance). This is where you will find the Moki Dugway. When I first saw this name, I thought, what the heck is that? My second thought was, I want to see it!

The Moki Dugway is an unpaved, graded, switchback road, that has been carved into the face of the cliff edge of Cedar Mesa

The views of the valley below are spectacular!

The road is three miles of steep, rocky road, that winds up (1,200’) to Cedar Mesa.

It looks like any one of these huge boulders may crash down upon the road at any time!

Below are a couple more expansive views from the mesa to the valley.

Again, we drove this in our Mini Countryman, so passenger vehicles are okay in good weather. But, it is rocky, and in some places, the road runs very close to the cliff edge! It was built to haul ore from Cedar Mesa to a mill near Mexican Hat. The rest of UT 261 is paved!
