Road Trip to San Antonio, 5/19/2019

Driving to San Antonio to pick up Kaitlyn’s car, we made a couple of stops along the way. The first was in Seguin, TX, to visit Kaitlyn’s parents. They have raised angora goats for years (and previously raised sheep as well). We enjoyed seeing and learning about the goats, who were both stand-offish and curious.

Every year when the kids are born, a couple have to be bottle-fed (for various reasons). As you can imagine, they become very attached to the human that feeds them. This one was looking for a bottle from Kathy, who scooped him up into her arms (even though he was big and unwieldy!)

The angora goats produce mohair and are sheared twice a year. Prices fluctuate but wholesale can be $5-$10 per pound. Kids produce about 5 lbs/year and adults double that amount. I definitely admire anyone who gets up 4:30-5:00 am every day to take care of farm animals! And the kids were so darn cute!

After picking up the car in San Antonio, we made a detour to eat at Blacks BBQ flagship restaurant in Lockhart, TX. Established in 1932 and still owned/operated by the founding family, they are well known for their excellent BBQ meats (www.blacksbbq.com).

We had beef brisket and sausage that were both divine. Their sides (mac and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, coleslaw and more) are served buffet style and were also delicious. The soul of Lockhart is displayed in photos on the walls at Blacks…from the local sports teams, marching bands, hunting trophies, to families and friends.

Family-recipe sauces and other restaurant souvenirs can be purchased here.

Amanda, John, and I all thoroughly enjoyed our meals. If you are not near Lockhart, you can enjoy their food at several other locations in TX.

We returned to Houston with our primary mission accomplished, Kaitlyn’s car is back home (while she is traveling on business). It was a bonus to meet her parents in Sequin and eat at Blacks BBQ in Lockhart along the way.

It’s always fun to experience new things in local towns across the country. That’s what our RV journey is all about!
