Afternoon in the Sonoran Desert, 10/07/2019

The main reason we like to stay here at Justin’s Diamond J RV Park is because of the access to desert trails. Right behind our site is a network of trails to explore, some leading to the Tucson Mountain State Park. I have found the afternoon light on the desert terrain enchanting.

Nurse trees have protected these saguaros and enabled them to thrive.

Saguaros with no arms are called spears. Check out “peace” and “quads.”

Oh dear, the skeleton of a large saguaro can be seen on the left.

The remains of prickly pear cacti provide habitats for pack rats that are passed down through many generations. Some have been dated to 40,000 years old!!

Beware of the teddy bear cholla! You may find these on your hiking boots or clothing.

The chainfruit cholla can be seen here. And the buckhorn chollas have a lovely reddish glow in the afternoon light.

We will enjoy many hikes on these trails during our stay (October – January) in Tucson.
