Death Valley, Dante's View - 9/19/14

From Twenty Mule Team Canyon we took a right on California 190 for several miles and then turned right on the spur road towards Dante's View. It is 13 miles south from the intersection.

Dante's View provides a mile-high panoramic view across the great salt pan. The elevation at this mountain-top location is 5,475' and temperature is about 20 degrees cooler than the basin below. The the views are fantastic!

To the south are the Owlshead Mountains (19 miles away); north are the Funeral Mountains (31 miles); west are the Badwater Basin and Panamint Range; east is the Greenwater Range. On a very clear day, the highest (Mt. Whitney) and lowest (Badwater Basin) points in the contiguous 48 states can be seen from here! From the parking lot are several paths, one that leads to the brink of the overlook and two others that run north or south for several hundred yards.

View to the west - Badwater Basin and Panamint Mountains.

View to the northwest - salt basin Funeral Mountains.

View to the east - Greenwater Range.

View to the south - Owlshead Mountains.

Breathtaking!

Admission to the Death Valley National Park is $20/vehicle for a 7-day pass. John's senior pass gets us in for free.
