Grand Canyon, Mather Point - 9/0414

This overlook is named for Stephen T. Mather (1867-1930), an industrialist and conservationist, who was played a key role in creating a federal agency to oversee our National Parks. He was appointed the first director in 1917 and served for 12 years. The Grand Canyon Visitor Center is located a short walk from the Rim Trail near Mather Point.

Be sure to check out the short video on the Grand Canyon as well as the exhibits in the Center.

This is also a stop for the free shuttle bus service available throughout the park. Rangers recommend use of the shuttle due to the limited parking at most of the overlooks along the South Rim. In fact, some portions of the South Rim will ONLY allow buses. The routes are published everywhere and the shuttle stops are well marked.

During the busy summer season, dogs are not permitted on any trails. However, beginning September 2, they are permitted on the Rim Trail (but not on any other trail in the canyon). We were delighted that Sadie could accompany us as we visited various parts of the park on the Rim Trail today.

Views from Mather Point.

We continued to travel west on the Rim Trail where a stunning view of the canyon appears at every twist and turn of the path.
The family.

More canyon views.

Sadie enjoyed exploring the grounds around the Visitor Center before we left this area today.

Admission to the park is $25/vehicle per day for a 7 day pass. John's senior pass gets us in for free. Check out their website for more details about this area of the park.

  1. I have enjoyed a Grand Canyon through the phoenix helicopter tours. Camping site is not allowed at the Rim South due to the weather condition but it open seasonally with the winter sow pack. Many visitors are interested in camping this spot receives many requests every year for the camping. During my helicopter tour I enjoyed a Grand canyon sky walk.

  2. Thanks for your comments. There are three campgrounds on the South Rim. They are Mather, Desert View, and Trailer Village for RVs (with full hookups). You may also obtain a backcountry pass by registering with the park (office is near the Village) and camp in the canyon.
