Hiking Las Minas Trail, 7/23/2019

Looking to spend some time in nature today, we decided to return to the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center (on Rte 68) where the trailhead for the Las Minas Trail can be found. It is one of the Taos Valley Overlook trails. Only about a half mile each way, the elevation gain is 500+ feet.

The trail is well marked and is primarily uphill. The views of the Rio Grande and surrounding area is the reward.

As we continued on the trail, the Rio Grande came into view in the distance. The terrain grew rockier as we gained altitude.

.

Sagebrush, pinyon pines, and junipers became abundant along the trail. The yellow flowers are desert marigolds that grow well in this rocky soil.

At the end of Las Minas Trail is a bench where we enjoyed the panoramic views of the Rio Grande. We even spotted some rafters in the distance.

Our girl, Sadie, seemed to enjoy the views as much as we did (after she grew tired of chasing lizards…that she never catches).

We just spent some time enjoying the lovely solitude and expansive views, before making the return hike down to the visitor center.

Not ready to go home yet, we drove down to the Taos Junction Bridge

This is a popular destination for rafting groups that begin at John Dunn Bridge (about 18 miles upriver). There are many outfitters offering a variety of trips with Class II to Class V rapids in the area. Some in this group were going for a swim.

We spent some time exploring the bridge area before returning home to our motor coach. For additional information about the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, go to www.blm.gov/new-mexico.
