After arriving in Fort Morgan yesterday, we took a drive to check out the area. While driving to the west end of the peninsula on US 180, John stopped to rescue a turtle in the road (redirecting cars around him). Other vehicles were very courteous, changing lands to avoid the turtle when he was in the road.
Finding a beach access point (of which there are many), we parked on the road and went for a stroll on Fort Morgan Beach.
Our sweet girl, Sadie, jumped right into the tidal pool for a swim. It was over her head, put a perfect swimming hole for kids of doggies.
In addition to checking out interesting things along the water, she also got to play frisbee…her favorite playtime activities.
Beautiful beach houses are available for rent (or purchase) along Fort Morgan beach, if you are seeking a quieter setting than Gulf Shores Beach.
The peninsula is very narrow at the western end. We drove to the bay side where we saw many shore birds (a couple of pelicans and a great blue heron). Multiple oil rigs in the bay are also visible from the shore.
On the way back to the RV park, we made a quick stop for a cocktail at Tacky Jack’s. Located next to Fort Morgan Marina, it overlooks the bay.
The restaurant is on the second floor (with a nice balcony), but we bought a drink (happy hour) from the bar on the ground floor. This place appears to be a favorite for the locals. There are two more Tacky Jack’s, one in Gulf Shore and the other in Orange Beach (www.tackyjacks.com).
Kids were fishing on the pier; and, look at the whopper John caught (ha ha!)
We always love a waterfront restaurant. It was nice sitting outside enjoying our cocktails.
This is our first visit to this part of Alabama. We are looking forward to spending the next month here.
