Jolly Roger RV Park, October 28 to November 28, 2018

Rating:  4.5 on a scale of 5

Location: This RV park is located in the Middle Keys at mile marked 59 in Marathon on Grassy Key. For us, this was a perfect hoe base as we were interested in visiting the numerous state parks in the Keys (north and south of Jolly Roger), Key West, and various points in between. As you know, there is but one road, the Overseas Highway (aka US Highway 1) from Key Largo to Key West, making it very easy to get around (unless there is an accident or heavy traffic).

Lot size: The park has 4 types of sites here with sites increasing in price as follows: interior, interior plus, seawall, and premium. We made the decision to stay at Jolly Roger because of a special deal for an interior plus site (they are larger and closer to the water than the interior sites). Go to their website to see a layout. We were in site 4C, a back-in, that provided plenty of room for the motorcoach, tow dolly and Mini Countryman.

Below is a view of the seawall sites as well as other lots in the park.

There are also several tent sites and a small hotel on-site.

Amenities: Cable TV and wifi is available through out the park (although we found the wifi barely useable). The laundry room is located in the hotel building.

There is a lovely (heated) swimming pool and a roped off swim/snorkeling area in the Gulf.

A large bark park was located close to our site where dogs can run off-leash. But, our Sadie, liked swimming near the boat launch, too!

Every night we walked along the seawall and saw lots of marine life including nurse sharks, spiny lobsters, and other marine life. And we loved the dock for birdwatching and sunset viewing, too.

Some staying at the RV park can also use the dock for their boats.

Near the dock is a covered group pavilion. Tiki Island has two tent sites and picnic tables where many enjoyed the sunset each night. The fish cleaning table was also heavily used while we were there.

Cost: $1,668/month including electricity/taxes for an interior site (promotional price)

Management: The folks that run this place to a great job. There were lots of folks arriving for the winter and many more in for a few days or a week. Receiving mail and packages was handled well by the office. There are lots of “rules” here particularly involving pets, but we enjoyed our stay here very much.

General Comments: There was significant damage to the park during Hurricane Irma in 2017. There was lots of work underway to repair the seawall sites and other damage to the grounds, as well as general maintenance activities. Several Florida state parks have great campgrounds (Bahai Honda, Curry Hammock, etc.), but you must reserve your site well in advance (11 months). We would definitely enjoy another stay here.
