Carlsbad RV Park & Campground, March 28 to April 18, 2018

Rating:  4.0 on a scale of 5

Location: When we made plans to visit Carlsbad, NM, it was to see the two national parks near here: Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains. Therefore, the location of this park (south of Carlsbad) was an excellent location to reach both. Additionally, the Lincoln National Forest is also nearby where there are many picturesque and dog-friend hiking trails.

However, due to a sudden death of a very dear friend in Pennsylvania, I needed to make arrangements to fly to Philadelphia. The options to fly from this part of the country were limited and expensive. John ended up driving me to Midland, TX, (150 miles away) to catch a flight that got me to PHL with one connection. Of course, we had never planned on any air travel from here, but just so you know, it is not convenient. There is a local airport but the number of connections and expense was out of the question. Otherwise, this park is a great home base for seeing the Carlsbad area.

Lot size: We were in site G5B. Sites G3, 4, and 5 are “double” pull throughs...meaning that they are not really pull t brought at all. Two RVs are accommodated in each with 2 sets of hook ups. There is a patio area with picnic table for each of the 2 sites in the pull through.

These sites are long enough to accommodate tow dollies and vehicles, but we had to back out when we left (difficult to to with tow dolly hooked up). With the help of a park staff member, we were able to back out with unhooking it (which was very nice).

You can in this photo how close the second RV was (in front of ours).

There are many pull through sites and back-in ones around the perimeter of the park. Many appear to be occupied by longer term residents. There is a lot of rigs that pull in and out of here every day; and, they are frequently sold out.

There are a two small cabins and a tent camping area as well.

Amenities: There are lots of amenities here including cable TV (with lots of channels) and wifi (very slow). The dog park conveniently located near our site.

The indoor heated swimming pool was closed when we first arrived, but we received an email from the staff when it was re-opened.

A fire pit, tire swings, and horseshoe pits are located near the pool building.

In the same building as the office/gift shop is the laundry room. DVDs and books can be borrowed by guests. A large game room with a TV and sitting area can also be found there.

Cost:  $575.07 for the first two weeks @ $255 weekly rate ($41/night; $301.62 for the third (unplanned) week ($43/night)

Management: This is a very well run park. Our check in was easy and easy; and, we were escorted to our site (always a nice convenience). The staff is very helpful and there is lots of maintenance and improvement work going on. I was particularly appreciative of them accommodating our request for an extended stay in our same site. They were great.

General Comments:  Overall, this is a good place to stay to visit the national parks near here. AT&T reception was not very good and the wifi was mostly not useable. The entire was dusty and windy, but that is the climate of the Chihuahuan Desert this time of year.
