A Walk in Buena Vista River Park, 5/16/2018

Our last day in Buena Vista, we returned to the River Park to walk along the Arkansas River Trail, Whitewater Trail, and then the River Park Loop Trail.

Parking at the south end of the town, we walked down to the Whitewater Trail close to the water.

The part of the Arkansas River that is in the Whitewater Park looks like a natural river. But, it has been engineered to enhance the riverbed for rafting and kayaking. Native river rocks have been carefully positioned and stabilized with concrete grout. In the process, efforts have also been made to increase recreational safety

These rapids are so popular with kayakers, that many have relocated to Buena Vista.
We stopped a few minutes to watch this guy practicing in the rapids water.

We continued walking north on the trail enjoying the beautiful views and interesting sights. Check out all of the rocks stuck in the roots of tree (from flooding).

Of course, our sweet doggie, Sadie, was anxious to go for a swim.

Ascending the steps from the lower Whitewater Trail, we continued north on the River Park Loop Trail at Buena Vista River Park.

Eventually we returned on the Arkansas River Trail to the Buena Vista Boulder Garden. What a great place for kids to start their rock climbing experiences! Sadie enjoyed it too!

This all-weather, outdoor, ceramic furniture at the South Main Town Square was very cool! Restaurants and shops can also be found in this newer part of Buena Vista.

The beautiful Collegiate Mountains can be seen from almost everywhere in town!

Buena Vista is a lovely mountain town in the middle of Colorado. We enjoyed our stay here more than we originally expected. For whitewater enthusiasts, it’s a place you will want to visit!
