Dog Beach at Smyrna Dunes Park, 10/16/2018

This 73-acre county park is located on the northern tip of the New Smyrna Beach peninsula...and is one of the few beaches where leashed dogs are permitted. There is a $10/vehicle day-use admission fee

A covered picnic pavilion with displays and restrooms is located near the parking area.

With our beach gear and picnic lunch, we walked to the dog beach area of Smyrna Dunes via the animal path. Our Sadie jumped into the water for swim (hot day!) and made some new friends right away. This little guy was trying to boss her around, but Sadie let him know she was the alpha! We enjoyed meeting and chatting with his owners...a lovely young couple.

Swimmingkayaking, and fishing are the primary activities here. The 350’ long pier, used primarily for fishing, afforded some great views of dog beach and surrounding area. I love this photo of a pelican in flight.

I loved this photo of a pelican in flight.

The waters of the Indian River flow through Ponce Inlet to the Atlantic Ocean here. And we were able to see the Ponce de Leon Lighthouse in the distance, but I zoomed in for a close up, too. (We last visited it in 2014.)

The US Coast Guard Station (no trespassing) marks the park boundary.

When the water reached high tide, we packed up and returned to the dog wash.

There are two miles of elevated walkways in the park that protect the natural environment of dunessalt water marshes and scrub zone, but pets are not permitted on them.

It was nice to visit a beach where Sadie could accompany us, but $10/day seems pretty pricey. This was our only visit here during our one-week stay in New Smyrna Beach  For additional information about the park, go to www.volusia.org/services/public-works/coastal-division/coastal-parks/smyrna-dunes-park.stml.
