Sand Island Petroglyphs, 8/29/2019

Located just three miles south of Bluff, NM, is the Sand Island Recreational Area managed by the BLM. A campground with 25 sites and a boat launch into the San Juan River are located here. Rafting on the river is a popular activity in the area.

The other main attraction here is about 100 yards of rock art carved into the cliff face. There is now a fence to protect the petroglyphs from vandalism.

Hundreds of petroglyphs that date from archaic to modern times can be seen.

Following the trail along the cliff wall, we were mesmerized by the interesting images of wildlife, anthropomorphic figures, spirals, geometric designs, and more.

We meandered down to the San Juan River. A shaded picnic area is available for visitors.

This extensive collection of petroglyphs is very accessible and, oh so interesting to see in person. For additional information about Sand Island, go to www.bearsearsmonument.org/sand-island-petroglyph-panel/.
