Sam's Family Spa Hot Water Resort, February 20 to April 20, 2016

Overall Rating:  5 on a scale of 5

Location: This park is located in Desert Hot Springs, a small town famous for its natural hot water aquifers about 15 miles from Palm Springs, CA, and an hour from Joshua Tree National Park and Salton Sea. There are many hiking trails to enjoy in the area including Coachella Valley Preserve, Tahquitz Canyon, and Indian Canyon. It proved to be a great home base for us while we explored the surrounding area while enjoying the natural mineral hot springs at the resort.

Lot Size: There are two distinct area in this park: mobile homes that are permanent year-round or vacation residences and the RV park area with 175 full hookup sites. We did not need reservations here (even for a month stay) as there are lots of sites available. When you check in at the office, they show you a map of the park and tell you to check out available sites and determine which one you prefer. We selected site 269 that was a "wedge-shaped" site on the perimeter of the park that afforded us plenty of room for our motorcoach (34'), tow dolly, and car. Concrete patios are at all sites. Almost all sites are back-in.

Amenities: The primary attraction here is, of course, the mineral hot springs. Unlike the other hot springs resorts here, they do not use any chlorine in the springs but drain and refill them each day. There is a swimming pool, one round pool that is moderately hot, and then four more pools for soaking that are progressively hotter.

The hot springs here range from 104 to 140 degrees.

The grounds are gorgeous with waterfalls and a pond that is home to many interesting waterfowl as well as koi and tilapia.

There is a grassy picnic area, barbecue facilities, volleyball and basketball courts, horseshoe pits, playgrounds, and sauna.

The laundromat here is great with 36 washers that cost $1.50/load. Very convenient.

This resort also has a motel (second floor near pool) and has many day guests that come to enjoy the hot springs and heated pool. The day-use rates are $14/person weekdays and $20/person on weekends.

Cost:  $540/month + electric (around $100 a month due to hot weather during our stay). The RV nightly rate is $50 and weekly rate is $300 (that includes electricity), so the monthly rate here is a good deal. Access to the mineral hot springs is included in the RV rates.

Management: This is a very well-run facility. From check-in to check-out to site maintenance to mail delivery, everything runs very smoothly here. The office is staffed for extended hours (7:30 am to 10 pm weekdays and to 11 pm on weekends). Everything is well maintained with folks working every day to keep the resort looking great. Brochures of location attractions and points of interest can be found in the office. A convenience store with a small selection items Is also there. Only ding about this place is wifi is an additional cost. We relied on our AT&T plan for data access as we do in many locations.

General Comments: This place has a great, laid-back vibe. And everyone we met was very friendly. There is a large desert area with trails across the street from Sam's where we went hiking almost everyday with our doggy (she loved it)! We had originally planned to stay here one month, but decided to extend our stay for a second month. When/if we are in this area again, we will definitely stay here.
