Galveston Island Historic Pleasure Pier - 4/11/15

Yesterday we went to the historic Galveston Island Pleasure Pier, the amusement park located near 21st Street along the seawall. A Bubba Gump Shrimp Company restaurant is also located here before the entrance to the amusement park.

The Pier was built after Hurricane Ike destroyed the previous structure and opened in May, 2012. Here is the interesting history of amusement parks and the pier with repeated damage due to hurricanes in the Gulf.

There are 16 rides on the pier. Some for younger kids and others classified as "extreme." Here are photos of a few of them.

John is not a fan of amusement park rides, but we did go on the Texas Flyer! It is the tallest swing ride in TX, 230' above see level. The view of the pier and the Gulf are amazing...what fun.

Ahoy matey!

There are lots of carnival-style games here. We tried our hand at Ring Toss, but didn't win anything! And these guys didn't either at Big Shot Hoops.

Views from the pier.

We took a stroll along the sea wall with Sadie. Loved these benches with marine-theme artwork done by local elementary school kids.

Swimmers and surfers.

Flowers in the dunes.

The cost is $26.95/per person per day for all day rides. There is a tiered pricing scheme based on the age/height of your children. We purchased passes to get on the pier ($10/adult; $7/senior) and bought individuals tickets for one ride. Really, we just wanted to explore this icon of Galveston Island.

Many families and teenagers were there having a blast. There are multiple places to grab some food and drinks in addition to the Bubba Gump Shrimp Restaurant on the pier. Check out their web site for additional information regarding hours and costs.
