Port Aransas, TX - 3/05/15

Although the weather has been unseasonably cold here in Corpus Christi, we have been wanting to check out Port Aransas located on the north end of Mustang Island. We drove on 22 south to left turn onto Rte 361 towards Port Aransas.

Our first stop was at the area where the free ferry boats transport vehicles across the Aransas Pass to continue on Rte 361. In 2012, approximately 1.14M vehicles used the ferries (one way).

We took a stroll around the park here.

Check out this beautiful yacht in the slip in front of this condo. Beautiful. And here is a "pirate"  tourist ship.

We happened to see signs for the Port Aransas Museum and stopped to see the exhibits.

There are exhibits, videos, historic photos, and artifacts on display here. Vintage duck decoys and sea turtle shell.

Fourth order Fresnel lens used at the Aransas Pass Lighthouse from 1865 until 1954.

Franklin D. Roosevelt fished for tarpon in 1937 from this boat. See the photo of him in the background. The fishing rod was also used by FDR.

The Tarpon Inn is the oldest structure in Port Aransas and has been a landmark since 1886. It is still in operation today offering fine dining at the Roosevelt's.

Fine dining is offered at Roosevelt's.

FDR visited Port Aransas in 1937 and his tarpon fishing trip was well documented including a feature article in Life Magazine, a real boon to tourism here.

A mounted tarpon and photos of fishing tournaments are located in the lobby.

There is a tradition for the fisherman to take a scale from a tarpon he/she caught, sign/date it and hang it in the Tarpon Inn lobby. They literally cover the walls!

From the Inn, we drove to the beach near the Caldwell Pier.

We were amazed to see surfers in the 48 degree weather. They had on wet suits, but still, that water had to be very cold!!

And, of course, Sadie, the frisbee dog, had a great time running around on the beach.

We drove along the beach, which is still a real novelty for us. Here are some views of the beach and the birds we saw along the way.

What a beautiful coastal community. We will visit again while we are here in Corpus Christi.
