Montgomery South RV Park, October 13 to 17, 2017

Rating:  3.50 on a scale of 5

Location: The park is located a very short distance off of I-65 south of Montgomery. In fact, we could see it from the highway when traveling south. It was a short, quick drive to Montgomery from here, so this location worked out very well for us.

Lot size: We had a large pull-through site with plenty of room for our tow dolly and car. We did not have to unhook the tow dolly during our stay which is convenient. It was very easy access driving into and out of the site.

Amenities: We had full hookups. There is a clubhouse, bathhouse and laundry room here. The wifi was quite good here (meaning it was usable!)

There are also cabins of various sizes available for rent here.

We went for several walks along the Venable Road (where there is very little traffic). We came across this tree with these green orange-like fruit. Curious about it, I learned that it is Maclura pomifera tree. Sometimes called Osage Orange or Horse Apple, the wood of the tree tree is very heavy, strong and flexible. It was long used by Native Americans for their bows. The fruit is not poisonous, but are rarely eaten (squirrels sometimes eat the seeds inside the fruit. It is believed to have been parts of the diet of sloths, mammoths and other large animals in the Pleistocene era.

We also saw lots of fire ant hills. I have become very wary of these little critters because their bits are extremely itchy and even painful. When I was bitten by some in Macon, GA, I ended up going to a clinic where the doctor prescribed steroids for the swelling on my feet and antibiotic cream. Apparently I had a strong reaction to their bits. AVOID them! Normally you are bitten when you step on one of their ant mounds. Here's what these little guys look like...

Cost: $144/stay; $36/night

Management: The folks here are great. Check in was quick and easy. When John checked with the office to see if he could wash the RV, the response was, "sure, no problem." They were friendly and helpful. The park is very well maintained. We picked up information about the attractions in Montgomery in the office as well.

General Comments:  A drive-through zoo is being built at the end of the road near the park and is expected to be completed in the spring of 2018. If you stay here in the future, you may want to check it out! We would stay here again if we are in this area in the future.
