Today, we planned to visit the Scranton Museum, a 70' restored shrimp boat, and the dog park at River Park on the Pascagoula River in Pascagoula, MS.
Shrimping is a major industry here in Pascagoula. I was interested in seeing the workings of a commercial shrimp boat.
Unfortunately, the the museum was closed due to damage caused by Hurricane Nate earlier this month (October).
When open, the admission fee is $2/adults and the hours of operation are Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm (www.cityofpascagoula.com/198/Scranton-Museum).
Also at the park are: a fishing pier, boat launch, picnic area and dog park. Of course, we visited the dog park to give our sweet doggie, Sadie, some play time.
It was a chilly day, 60 degrees (for us), on the fishing pier.
Sadie always likes to jump up to see what she can see. There is a lower level where you boaters can dock as well as floating docks.
A couple of women were crabbing from the pier (five baskets). We were surprised to see how large the crabs were that they had caught in less than an hour. Sadie was pretty curious about those crustaceans, too!
Wetlands can be seen next to the park. But, beware, of innocent look ant hills like these. They are home to nasty little fire ants...do not step on one!!
We tried to find the Magnolia Birding Pier, but no luck. While I found information about it online, I could never find an address. We stopped at this location, across the river from the Port of Pascagoula. Sadie loves it when John lets her run off-leash between the two of us.
The Signal Warhorse I, 145' LOA, 45' width, 17' draft, is used for ocean towing. The fuel tank holds almost 250,000 gallons. Wow! A second ship of similar dimensions is next to it.
On our way out of town, we came upon an arts and craft festival. We stopped to check it out (as we always enjoy getting a feel for local communities).
There were lots of local merchandise and food vendors. John, of course, had to pick up some popcorn...his favorite food!
The band was great with southern style tunes. And we were surprised to see a town of this size with so many police motorcycles!
We enjoyed visiting the park, even though the Scranton Museum was closed, and it's always fun to attend local town events. A lovely day.
