Major Mid-Year Itinerary Change, 6/25/2018

Today we decided to completely change our 2018 plans (travel to Idaho, Washington, Oregon, CA, and AZ) to head back to Houston, TX, to help our daughter, Amanda, go to New York, NY, and Philadelphia, PA. Yikes!

We packed up in Baker, NV, and left for Houston (1,550 miles) on 6/26/2018 and arrived there 6/28/2018. We spent two nights on the road (which was a bit of an adventure) and booked a one-month stay at Fallbrook RV Park in northern Houston.

With a plan to clear out Amanda’s rental unit in Queens, NY, we rented a quad cab truck from Enterprise. We packed stuff for a one-week stay in NYC and PA (including our sweet doggie, Sadie), and departed for NYC (1,660 miles) on July 3 after Amanda and Kaitlyn wrapped up at work (around 5 pm).

Driving straight through with multiple drivers, we were able to arrive in Astoria, NY about 24 hours later. In fact, we were in time for Amanda and Kaitlyn to make My Fair Lady playing on Broadway. John, Sadie and I stayed at a nice Airbnb studio apartment (the best option for an overnight stay in Queens!) The next morning Amanda sorted through her storage unit (with our help) and we packed up the truck (again, in time for them to go to the matinee show of Frozen on Broadway).

We drove the truck to Chadds FordPA, (150 miles) and stayed with my brother and family until July 9, when we picked up the girls at the Amtrak Station in WilmingtonDE in the morning and head southwest to Houston. It was awesome to spend some time with the family, our nieces and nephew and their kids while we were in PA!

I had planned to pick up a copy of Amanda’s birth certificate in Philadelphia, PA (where she was born) because when ordering one online the processing time is 60 days (but same day in person). However, it arrived while we were traveling and we were spared a trip to Philadelphia. Originally, Amanda and Kaitlyn had airline tickets to NYC, but because Amanda could not get a TX drivers license without a state-issued birth certificate, she could not fly. Proving that you were born in the US requires more than a valid out-of-state drivers license, TX voter registration card, social security card, and W-2/pay check stubs in the border state! You must take off work, arrive before the DMV opens at 7:30 am, and expect to wait 2-4 hours to even talk to someone about getting a license. It’s crazy!

Arriving by about 8:00 am in Houston (1,525 miles) July 10, both Kaitlyn and Amanda went to work that day. John, Sadie, and I were so happy to be back to our RV home. The next morning we unloaded the truck at a storage unit in Houston (about $320 cheaper than the one in NYC) and returned the truck to Enterprise. Whew!

That was a brutal series of road trips that we have no desire to repeat!  But we accomplished what we set out to do in record time. Yay! Now we will chill out (well, you cannot really chill in Houston in July) and figure out what our travel plans are for the rest of 2018.

So, if you were wondering why I have fallen so far behind on my blog posts...now you know.
