Visiting McGovern Centennial Gardens, 7/18/2018

Located at the southern end of the Houston Museum District is the John P and Katherine G McGovern Centennial Gardens. It opened in 2014 to commemorate 100 years since Hermann Park was established.

In 1914George Hermann bequeathed his estate to the City of Houston that became Hermann Park. A 445-acre urban park, the Houston Zoo, Miller Outdoor Theatre, and Houston Museum of Natural Science are located near the gardens. In total 19 institutions make up the Houston Museum District. Below is a map of the 15-acre gardens.

The Centennial Green is 350’ long and leads to the mound at the opposite end of the gardens.

Pergola Walk is on either side of the Green. The Cherie Flores Garden Pavilion is lovely area to relax and enjoy the surrounding beauty.

As we walked to the mound at the end of the green, we enjoyed the beautiful flowers in bloom everywhere.

It was a blistering hot day and the canopy of this oak tree provided some much-needed shade!

Bronze statues of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King are located nearby.

Near the corner of Caroline and Hermann Drives, is the Hawkins Sculpture Walk . Busts of notable figures from around the world are on display here. Below are four of them.

This is a beautiful green space in urban Houston...a delight!  Lots of weddings and other events are held in this beautiful park. For additional information, go to /www.hermannpark.org/visit/mcgovern-centennial-gardens.
