Originally, the mining industry (silver) created the town in the late 1800s. By the 1930s skiing started to become a tourist attraction. Today, the town is well known as a top skiing, mountain biking, and adventure community. There are three large ski resort areas and two were major locations for ski and snowboarding events for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Park City is the:
- main location of the Sundance Film Festival
- home of the U.S. Ski Team
- training center for members of the Australian Freestyle Ski team
- location of Olympic bobsled/skeletons/luge tracks at the Utah Olympic Park
In the historic Main Street area there are many upscale luxury retailers, clubs, bars, and restaurants. There are 64 Victorian buildings that are on the National Register Historic Places.
Main Street.
Tribute to miners.
Statue of Bud Wright, 1920 lineman for the local telephone company, skiing the mountains around Park City to repair phone lines on his home-made skis.
Loved this store and the sales associates, Connie, that we met here. John even ended up finding a hat he liked!
My handsome husband.
Loved this store, too.
And many, many, more luxury jewelry, leather, fur, and unique clothing stores.
Loved this flower.
The real attraction here in Park City are the ski resorts. We drove up Highway 224 to the Stein Eriksen Lodge (I had been there several years ago for a business meeting), Silver Lake Lodge, Stag Lodge, and back down through the Deer Valley Area. The mountain views are just beautiful. And ski slopes are everywhere.
We then visited the Utah Olympic Park that I will discuss in the next post. This is really a lovely town and worth a visit if you are in the area. If you are a mountain biker you will love it in the summer, and if you like to ski, you will love it in the winter. We just liked seeing the beautiful scenery here.
