Sundance, WY - 8/03/14

The town was named Sundance by Albert Hoge to honor the Native Americans and the sun dance they performed on Sundance Mountain and Inyan Kara Mountain. Hoge was a Prussian-born immigrant who staked his claim in 1879. The county seat of Crook County, the population of Sundance was 1,182 in 2010.

Of course, one of the most famous outlaws in American history got his start on the road to infamy by stealing a horse, gun and saddle in Sundance. Harry Longabaugh landed in the jailhouse for 18 months, and became known as the "Sundance Kid." Outside the original location of the jail, the town has erected a statue of the "Kid" lounging in his cell.

Crook County Museum: This small museum is a real gem with exhibits displaying over 7,000 artifacts.

Photos of Harry Longabaugh (aka the Sundance Kid).

Sundance Kid (seated on the left), Butch Cassidy (seated on the right).

Original courtroom furniture where his trial was held.

Antique law badges.

Phenomenal gun collection can be found here.  John always finds these antique rifles and handguns fascinating. And this small museum had a huge collection.

Winchesters (1890s).
Tin sign.
Handguns.

Buggy.

Hairdresser's equipment!
And hair dryer.
Still from Prohibition.

Al Capone played at this table!

After seeing the museum, we strolled about town and saw these War Memorials to honor Crook County veterans. This is the WW II memorial that lists the names of those who died.

And Korean, Vietnam, WWI, Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan on these plaques.

And, of course, bikers are in town for the Sturgis Rally.

It was fun to see this quaint Western town. We highly recommend the museum. Admission is free, but we did give a donation.
