Big Bend, Boquillas Canyon Trail - 2/04/15

From the Boquillas Canyon Overlook, we drove about a mile west on the Boquillas Canyon Road to the parking lot where the Boquillas Canyon Trailhead is located. Unfortunately, no pets are allowed on any of the trails in the park.

The trail is an easy 1.4 mile round trip with a climb at the beginning.

View of the Rio Grande from the top of the climb.

Mexican Nationals can be seen across the river. There are "social trails" that have been created by these folks into the park where they sell small items. This is illegal, but we saw evidence of this along the trail here.

Entrance to Boquillas Canyon.

Prickly pear cactus with red spiky thorns. Ouch!

There's a Mexican National who sings on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. Here is one of his tip jars (there are several along the trail).

As soon as he sees hikers, he starts singing and waving! He also had some merchandise displayed for sale.
Rio Grande.
Desert marigolds.

Boquillas Canyon and my hiking companion.

Check out all of these caves in the limestone from erosion caused by water and wind.

The path is right along the river near the end of the trail.

Turtles!

Final view of the Rio Grande before we descended to the parking lot.

This hike was perfect for our first morning at Big Bend.  We really wanted to see the Rio Grande, up close, and this was a great way to do it. Loved it.
